Volunteer Story: Atharva
Atharva initially began volunteering at the Volunteer Desk at Health Sciences North (HSN) over a year ago to satisfy his high school community service hours but found himself wanting to continue even after he met his requirement. “My sister persuaded me to join the volunteer team at HSN,” said Atharva. “She used to volunteer here and had great things to say about it which is why I chose the hospital to get my volunteer hours.”
Volunteering offers the opportunity to meet and befriend other like-minded people, which resonates with Atharva. “I really enjoy coming to volunteer at the hospital every week to help make a difference while also catching up with other volunteers on my shift. They have become my friends and I enjoy spending time with them in a meaningful way,” said Atharva.
“Talking with patients, staff, and fellow volunteers has allowed me to grow my conversation and communication skills. I’m pleased with the skills that volunteering has taught me and look forward to using these skills as I advance in schooling and my career.”

Atharva a commencé à faire du bénévolat au Bureau d’information d’Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) il y a un peu plus d’un an en vue de remplir l’exigence du service communautaire pour obtenir son diplôme d’études secondaires et il a trouvé qu’il voulait continuer à le faire même après avoir satisfait à cette exigence. « Ma sœur m’a persuadé de devenir membre de l’équipe de bénévoles à HSN, affirme Atharva. Elle a fait du bénévolat à HSN et avait de bonnes choses à dire à ce sujet, ce qui m’a amené à choisir l’hôpital pour remplir l’exigence du service communautaire. »
Selon Atharva, le bénévolat offre l’occasion de rencontrer des gens qui pensent comme vous et de se lier d’amitié avec eux, ce qui lui parle. « J’aime beaucoup faire du bénévolat à l’hôpital chaque semaine pour apporter ma contribution et obtenir les dernières nouvelles auprès des autres bénévoles de mon quart. Ils sont devenus mes amis et j’aime vraiment passer du temps avec eux, c’est très valorisant », ajoute Atharva.
« Parler avec les patients, le personnel et mes collègues bénévoles m’a permis d’améliorer mes compétences en conversation et en communication. Je suis ravi des compétences que j’ai acquises en faisant du bénévolat et j’ai hâte de pouvoir les mettre en pratique à mesure que je poursuis mes études et ma carrière futures. »
Atharva se passionne pour le bénévolat à HSN et encourage les autres élèves à l’envisager. Les bénévoles jouent un rôle important à HSN et nous les remercions de leur détermination à rehausser l’expérience du patient à HSN.
