Volunteer Story: Jack

Jack Caswell, a retired pharmacist, wanted to use some of his spare time to help others so he began volunteering at Health Sciences North (HSN) three years ago. He realized that many people find themselves anxious or overwhelmed when they step foot in a hospital and his volunteer role as a ‘way-finder’ at the Information Desk is satisfying, knowing that he is helping patients and visitors navigate their way around HSN.

“I greatly enjoy working with other volunteers who share similar attractions to volunteering: because they want to be part of a team in a positive environment. We thrive on gratitude and get lots back for helping people. I’m amazed at the number of times patients and visitors return to the Information Desk to thank me and other volunteers for what we do,” said Jack.

One of Jack’s most memorable experiences volunteering at HSN is when he witnessed one of his fellow volunteers perform a compassionate and selfless act of kindness. “There was a lady who passed by our desk several times each shift and she looked very sad. It was winter and she never wore a coat and always looked cold. My co-worker stopped her one day and asked why she wasn’t wearing a coat. She admitted she didn’t own a coat. My co-worker showed up to her next shift with a coat and gave it to the lady. The lady wore that coat every day until she was discharged from the hospital,” said Jack.

“I strongly encourage people to volunteer with HSN as you will be rewarded with gratitude, ample exercise, and hours of interaction with wonderful people and a great team,” adds Jack.

Jack Caswell, pharmacien à la retraite, voulait consacrer une partie de son temps libre à aider les autres. Il a donc commencé à faire du bénévolat à Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN) il y a trois ans. Il s’est rendu compte que bien des gens se sentent anxieux et dépassés lorsqu’ils vont à l’hôpital, et il trouve son rôle d’« orienteur » bénévole au Bureau d’information valorisant, puisqu’il aide les patients et visiteurs à arriver à leur destination à HSN.

« J’aime beaucoup travailler avec les autres bénévoles qui sont attirés par le bénévolat pour la même raison que moi : parce qu’ils veulent faire partie d’une équipe travaillant dans un environnement positif.  Aider les gens favorise notre épanouissement et nous apporte beaucoup de satisfaction. Je suis franchement étonné par le grand nombre de patients et de visiteurs qui retournent au Bureau d’information pour me remercier ainsi que les autres bénévoles du travail que nous accomplissons, » affirme Jack.

Le fait d’être témoin d’un acte de gentillesse altruiste et compatissant de la part de l’une de ses collègues bénévoles est l’un des moments les plus mémorables du bénévolat de Jack. « Il y avait une femme qui passait par notre bureau plusieurs fois par quart de travail et qui avait l’air très triste. C’était l’hiver et elle ne portait jamais de manteau et semblait toujours avoir froid. Ma collègue l’a arrêtée un jour et lui a demandé pourquoi elle ne portait pas de manteau. Elle a admis qu’elle n’en avait pas. Ma collègue s’est présentée au prochain quart de travail avec un manteau qu’elle a donné à la femme. Elle l’a porté tous les jours jusqu’à sa sortie de l’hôpital », ajoute Jack.

« J’encourage fortement les gens à faire du bénévolat à HSN. Vos efforts seront récompensés par de la gratitude, beaucoup d’exercice et des heures d’interactions avec des gens fantastiques et une merveilleuse équipe », termine-t-il.

Les bénévoles contribuent à améliorer l’expérience globale du patient. Nous remercions Jack et les autres bénévoles de faire don de leur temps pour aider les autres.
