Iris' Story
Iris was eight-weeks-old when her family doctor noticed she had low muscle tone and random leg shaking – raising concerns about potential seizures. The next day, Iris met with a pediatrician in the Pediatric Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) at Health Sciences North (HSN) and became an inpatient for three days to undergo testing.
Iris was diagnosed with Infantile-Onset Pompe disease, a genetic disorder affecting her muscles and heart, and required full-day enzyme replacement therapy infusions every week at SickKids in Toronto. After six months of travel, Iris’ condition stabilized and she was transferred back to the Pediatric ACU at HSN where she continues to receive her weekly infusions.
Iris’ parents, Alex and Kelsey, are grateful for the specialized pediatric care provided close to home. “Being in Sudbury for Iris’ infusions allows us to have more family time together to create memories and traditions, have predictable work schedules, reduced stress, can sleep and cook in our own home, and enjoy our passion for travelling again,” said Kelsey.
“We were a bit anxious leaving SickKids and beginning Iris’ infusions at HSN but it did not take long before we felt comfortable and developed trusting relationships with the staff. We are always greeted with smiles and friendly attention to ensure Iris’ needs are met and our day is as positive as can be. The staff exemplify love and joy and really make our weekly trip to HSN that much easier.”
Although there is no cure for Pompe disease, Iris’ infusions allow her grow and develop at a healthy rate and her treatment at HSN has been a huge relief for her family.
