Patient Story: Gail

In October 2022, Gail began experiencing immense pressure in her chest, but no pain – she thought it was seasonal allergies. After three days of no improvement, Gail went to see her family doctor who diagnosed her with atrial fibrillation – an irregular and rapid heart rate that if left untreated could result in blood clots in the heart. A trip to the Emergency Department (ED) at Health Sciences North (HSN) led to some testing and then Gail went home with a prescription for blood thinners and a follow-up appointment with a cardiologist.

A few months after the ED visit and her cardiologist appointment, Gail had an angiogram performed – a procedure to view the coronary arteries and the vessels that supply blood to the heart. Throughout her experience at HSN, she was grateful for the amazing care she received.

“I was extremely nervous but the nurses and staff were gentle and took care of any anxiety I had,” said Gail. “I was thoroughly impressed with how accommodating and patient the nurses were as they lead me through the angiogram procedure; they even provided a blanket so that I can stay warm.”

Gail’s angiogram results showed that she had a 25% blockage in the left anterior part of her heart and prescribed more blood thinners to help lessen the current blockage and act as a preventative measure.

En octobre 2022, Gail a commencé à ressentir une immense pression dans sa poitrine, mais pas de douleur. Elle a donc pensé qu’il s’agissait d’allergies saisonnières. Lors de sa visite au Service des urgences d’Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN), on lui a fait passer des tests et elle est rentrée chez elle avec une ordonnance pour un anticoagulant et un rendez-vous de suivi chez un cardiologue.

Quelques mois après sa visite au Service des urgences et son rendez-vous chez le cardiologue, Gail a subi une angiographie, une intervention qui permet d’examiner les artères coronaires et les vaisseaux sanguins qui transportent le sang vers le cœur. Elle a été reconnaissante des soins extraordinaires qu’elle a reçus à HSN tout au long de son expérience.

« J’étais très nerveuse, mais les infirmiers et infirmières et le personnel ont été très aimables et ont calmé mon anxiété, ajoute-t-elle. J’ai été très impressionnée de voir à quel point le personnel infirmier a été accommodant et patient lorsqu’il m’a expliqué le déroulement de l’angiographie; on m’a même recouverte d’une couverture pour que je reste bien au chaud », termine-t-elle.

Les résultats de l’angiographie de Gail ont révélé un blocage de 25 % de la partie antérieure gauche de son cœur. On lui a donc prescrit d’autres anticoagulants pour réduire le blocage et en tant que mesure de prévention.

Gail apprécie énormément les soins qu’elle a reçus de la part du personnel et des médecins attentionnés qui l’ont aidée tout au long de son cheminement. « Ma famille et moi achetons chaque mois des billets de la Loto-Nord 50/50 d’HSN dans l’espoir de gagner, bien sûr, mais c’est aussi gratifiant de savoir que mon soutien permet aussi d’améliorer les soins prodigués aux patients à l’hôpital, un endroit où j’ai moi-même dû recevoir des soins et j’en suis très reconnaissante. »
